Agathokles ruled Baktria during one of the most politically fractured periods in the post-Seleucid east, and his coinage is remarkable for a reason no weight or reference number conveys: he issued bilingual, biscript coins in multiple Indian languages and scripts — among the earliest Greek rulers to do so — suggesting deliberate administrative reach into the subcontinent rather than mere frontier posturing. Some of his issues carry Brahmi and Kharosthi legends alongside Greek, a policy with no clear parallel among his Baktrian predecessors.
He also struck a unique series of commemorative issues honoring earlier Mauryan and Indo-Greek rulers, possibly as a legitimizing gesture in contested territory.
