Obverse description A fast quadriga gallops vigorously to the right, the charioteer firmly grasping the kentron and reins; above the horses, Nike flies left to crown the victor with a wreath, a compositional motif characteristic of Sicilian coinage of the late fifth century BC. The scene is rendered in a dynamic, finely detailed style consistent with the high artistic standards of the Sicilian school. The ethnic legend KATANAIΩN appears in the exergue below the ground line, identifying the issuing city.
