| Reverse description | A large double axe (labrys) dominates the centre of the field, its handle rendered vertically with the twin crescent-shaped blades extending symmetrically to either side. To the left of the handle hangs a cluster of grapes on a vine tendril, a symbol of the island's agricultural fertility. To the right stands a small figure of Athena Promachos in full martial stance, helmeted and wearing a short chiton, with her arm raised and shield at her side. The ethnic legend ΤΕΝΕΔΙΩΝ is inscribed in Greek characters along the upper periphery of the flan. The composition is characteristically Tenedian and serves as the principal civic type of the island throughout the classical period. |
