| Obverse description | Helmeted head of Athena facing right, wearing an Attic helmet with an upright crest and raised cheek pieces rendered in fine engraving style. Two incuse letter groups in tiny characters appear behind the neck truncation: ΤΗ above and ΙΠ below, serving as the engraver's or magistrate's signature. The portrait is executed in the vigorous archaic-to-classical transitional style characteristic of Thessalian coinage of the late fifth to mid-fourth century BC. The facial features are rendered with careful attention to detail, the cheek pieces of the helmet framing the profile portrait. |
