Tenedos occupied a strategically critical position at the mouth of the Hellespont, and its coinage reflects the toll that position exacted. The island changed hands repeatedly during the fifth and fourth centuries — absorbed into the Delian League under Athenian pressure, then contested during the Peloponnesian War, and again during the Persian reassertion of Aegean power formalized by the King's Peace of 387 BC, which effectively ended this coinage type.
The island's mint is notable for issuing a strikingly consistent series across this entire period despite the political turbulence above it.
