This issue falls within the so-called "Transitional" group identified by Chester Starr in his 1970 study of Athenian coinage, bridging the archaic and early classical owl series. The years 467–465 BC place it squarely in the aftermath of the Persian Wars, when Athens was flush with silver from the Laurion mines and aggressively rebuilding its fleet and civic infrastructure under Cimon's influence. Starr 83 is a scarce die pairing within a already thinly documented transitional phase — fewer than a handful of confirmed specimens appear in major collections.
