| Obverse description | Kantharos (wine cup) depicted in high relief at center, with a small pellet or decorative element above the rim, set within a rectangular incuse field with a raised border. The kantharos is rendered with a broad, shallow bowl and a slender stem, characteristic of the Archaic artistic style. The field surrounding the vessel shows the textured surface typical of early hammered coinage. No legend is present. The design reflects the Dionysiac symbolism commonly associated with Zakynthian coinage of this period. |

| Additional information |
Zakynthos, the Ionian island off the western Peloponnesian coast, struck its early silver coinage during a period when the island maintained enough commercial independence to operate its own mint — no small matter given Corinthian dominance of nearby trade routes. The HGC 6, 219 type is a scarce issue; the Rosen collection example, one of the better-documented specimens, attests to how rarely these pieces appear in the trade in any condition.
