Obverse description The youthful hero Thessalos, nude save for a chlamys draped over his shoulders and a petasos suspended behind his head, strides vigorously to right. He grasps with both hands a band or rope secured around the head of a bull lunging forward to right, the composition conveying the powerful Thessalian tradition of taurokatapsia. The partial inscription ΧΑΝ appears in the field, likely representing part of the ethnic or a personal name. The style is characteristic of early classical Thessalian coinage, with bold, energetic figural rendering.
