| Reverse description | The hero Diomedes, depicted nude save for a chlamys (short military cloak) knotted around his neck and falling behind his shoulders, strides vigorously to the right. In his raised right hand he brandishes a dagger, while his extended left arm clutches the Palladion, the sacred cult image of Athena that he famously seized from Troy. The ethnic legend ΑΡΓΕΙΩΝ (of the Argives) is disposed around the field, and the control letter nu (Ν) appears between the figure's legs. The dynamic composition reflects the civic pride of Argos in its mythological heritage. |
