Chalkis lost direct control of its mint intermittently during this period, most critically following Macedonian intervention after the battle of Chaironeia in 338 BC, when Philip II effectively reorganized the political structure of Euboian cities to suit Macedonian strategic interests. That the city continued striking silver at all reflects the degree of administrative autonomy Macedon permitted compliant poleis.
