Reverse description A bold plain cross divides the reverse field into four quarters, each canton occupied by a crowned ermine spot — the heraldic symbol of Brittany — reflecting Louis XII's dual role as King of France and Duke of Brittany. The arms of the cross extend to the inner border. The surrounding circular Latin legend, separated by pellet stops and terminating with the mint letter R for Rennes, reads: SIT NOMEN DNI BENEDICTV R, a scriptural invocation blessing the name of the Lord. The overall style is consistent with hammered billon issues of the reign of Louis XII.
