Obverse description Crowned quartered shield of France and Dauphine arms at centre, the quarters displaying fleurs-de-lis (France) and a dolphin (Dauphine), surmounted by a small crosslet. The shield is enclosed within an inner beaded circle. The circumferential legend in Latin reads FRANCISCVS REX FRACORVM N, separated by annulets, with the mint letter for Grenoble visible in the field. The die is struck on a typically irregular flan, characteristic of hammered billon coinage of the period.
