Obverse description Central field features the crowned royal arms of France, quartered with the fleurs-de-lis of France and set within an ornate shield surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is flanked by decorative foliate elements, consistent with the heraldic style of the mid-sixteenth-century French hammered coinage. The circumferential Latin legend reads HENRICVS.D.G.FRANCORVM.REX, identifying Henry II as king of the Franks by the grace of God. The coin shows the characteristic irregular flan and bold relief typical of hammered production under the Valois monarchy.
