| Obverse description | Central field displays a papal-style heraldic shield bearing two crossed keys in saltire, surmounted by the papal tiara with its characteristic triple crown, all rendered in the hammered style typical of late 16th-century French feudal coinage. The shield is set within a plain inner border. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading GREGORIVS XIII PON MAX, identifying the reigning pontiff Gregory XIII as the issuing authority. The coin's irregular flan and somewhat crude striking are characteristic of hammered silver production of the period. |
