| Obverse description | A floriated cross with indented (échancrée) arms fills the field, with a crown occupying the first and fourth cantons and a fleur-de-lis in the second and third cantons. The legend encircles the design, identifying the issuing monarch. The engraving is typical of late sixteenth-century French hammered billon coinage, with bold, slightly irregular lettering characteristic of the Béarn mint. The conjoined letters D and B appear in the legend, denoting Henri IV's title as Duke and sovereign of Béarn. |
