Obverse description Crowned oval shield bearing three fleurs-de-lis, the arms of France, flanked on either side by the royal initial C (for Carolus X), all set within a circular Latin legend. The crown surmounting the shield is rendered in high relief, and the fleurs-de-lis are characteristic of the French royal arms of the late 16th century. The coin's irregular flan and hammered manufacture give the design an uneven strike typical of French billon coinage of the period. The mint mark appears within the legend.
