| Obverse description | Central device consisting of a large royal crown rendered in relief, surmounted by a prominent fleur-de-lis finial at the apex. The crown is depicted with three visible fleurs-de-lis along its upper edge and two additional lateral points, all executed in the broad, somewhat crude style characteristic of 14th-century hammered billon coinage. The surrounding field is flat and unadorned, with the circular legend in uncial Latin characters running along the periphery. The flan is irregular in outline, typical of hand-struck medieval production. |

Edward III's claim to Aquitaine was perpetually contested — the duchy had been English in theory since Eleanor's marriage to Henry II in 1154, but French kings routinely used feudal technicalities to seize it back. This billon double was struck during a period when Edward was simultaneously pressing his claim to the French throne itself, making the coinage of Aquitaine as much a political instrument as a transactional one. The broad date range reflects extended use of the type across shifting political circumstances rather than continuous uninterrupted production.
