Obverse description Bearded and draped bust of Maximilien de Béthune facing right, set within a beaded inner circle. The portrait is rendered in a crude but characterful style typical of provincial French feudal coinage of the early 17th century. A circular Latin legend surrounds the inner circle, reading the sovereign's name and title. The field is flat with a slightly irregular surface consistent with hammered production.
