Obverse description Large rightward-facing laureate bust of Louis XIII, bearded, draped and cuirassed, occupying most of the coin's field. The effigy is rendered in a bold, somewhat naive style characteristic of early seventeenth-century French provincial coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, reading LOVIS.XIII.R.D.FRAN.ET.NAVA.D., identifying the king as ruler of France and Navarre.
