| Obverse description | Bare or lightly draped bust of Louis XIII facing right, depicted as a young sovereign with a large ruff collar, occupying the central field within a beaded inner circle. The portrait reflects the early baroque style typical of French royal coinage of the period. The surrounding legend, separated from the effigy by the inner circle, reads LOVIS XIII R DE FRAN ET NAV with the mint mark K (Bordeaux) at the base, with several die varieties affecting the abbreviation of the royal titles. Louis XIII was nine years old when these were struck, with his mother Marie de Médicis ruling as regent following Henri IV's assassination in May 1610. The Bordeaux mint — operating under the mint mark "K" — was one of several provincial facilities pressed into producing copper coinage as the regency struggled to maintain fiscal continuity through a politically fractious period marked by noble rebellions and competing power factions.
The second type designation reflects a die modification introduced during the run, distinguishing it from the opening issues of the reign.
