Obverse description Draped bust of Gaston d'Orléans facing right, depicted in a lace collar typical of mid-17th century French portraiture, enclosed within a plain inner circle. The portrait is rendered in a somewhat crude hammered style characteristic of provincial Dombes coinage. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy, reading variants of GASTON VSV D LA SOV DOM, identifying Gaston as usufructuary of the sovereignty of Dombes. The field shows the rough, uneven surface typical of copper hammered issues of this period.
