Additional information

Château-Regnault was a tiny principality on the Meuse in the Ardennes, and its right to strike copper coinage was perpetually contested by the French crown. Francis of Bourbon-Conti, who held the title during this period, exploited the principality's technical sovereignty to issue doubles tournois in direct imitation of royal types — a practice Paris tolerated uneasily and periodically attempted to suppress through arrêts of the royal council.

CGKL 656 is among the scarcer of the Château-Regnault attributions, the principality's output being small and its coins poorly documented in contemporary mint records.
