| Obverse description | Central field features a short cross with a small annulet or pellet at its center, dividing the coin into four quadrants. The arms of the cross extend toward the beaded border, with each quadrant displaying simple linear decorative elements characteristic of feudal billon coinage. The surrounding circular legend, interrupted by the cross terminals, reads KAROLVS BRITAՈ DVX, identifying Charles as Duke of Brittany. The overall style is typical of mid-fourteenth-century hammered feudal issues, with irregular flan shape and uneven strike. The beaded inner border frames both the legend and the central cross device. |
