Obverse description Central field dominated by a large roman capital letter G, the initial of Pope Gregory XIII, surmounted by a papal tiara with crossed keys above. Flanking the crowned G are the initials R and a further letter, likely denoting the pontifical authority. The peripheral legend in Latin runs around the irregularly shaped hammered flan, partially visible due to the characteristic striking irregularities of the period.
Obverse script Latin

Reverse description Central cross pattée occupies the field, with a fleur-de-lis terminating each arm, forming a cross fleurdelisée characteristic of pontifical Avignon coinage of the late sixteenth century. The four fleurs-de-lis in the angles of the cross reinforce the ecclesiastical and French heraldic associations of the Comtat Venaissin. The surrounding Latin legend, partially legible around the irregular flan, identifies the cardinal legate Charles and co-legate Georges of Avignon.
