Obverse description The field is divided by a plain cross into four quarters, each bearing letters composing the inscription BRIT TONV arranged across two lines within a double inner circle. The peripheral legend reading IOHAnnES DVX, introduced by a cross pattée, encircles the design in Gothic-style Latin characters. The overall composition is characteristic of the crude hammered billon coinage of medieval Breton dukes, with notably irregular flan edges and uneven strike depth.
