Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of Louis XIII facing right, with flowing long hair rendered in the Baroque style by engraver Jean Warin. The king's effigy is portrayed with classical idealization, the laurel wreath firmly set upon the head. The mint date appears in the exergue below the bust. The encircling Latin legend reads LVD. XIII. D. G. - FR. ET. NAV. REX., identifying the monarch as King of France and Navarre by the grace of God. The coin's broad flan and fine relief execution are characteristic of the new milled coinage introduced under Warin's direction at the Monnaie de Paris.
