Obverse description Bare-headed juvenile effigy of Louis XIV facing right, with short curly hair dressed in the antique manner, the neck truncation visible at the base. The circumferential Latin legend reads LVD. XIIII. D. G. FR. ET. NAV. REX., with the date 1644 placed at the bottom of the field below the royal bust. The portrait, engraved by Jean Warin, displays fine baroque detail in the treatment of the hair and the youthful features of the young king. The coin is struck on a broad flan with a milled edge visible along the rim.
