| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of Gaston d'Orléans facing right, with long flowing hair, set against a plain field. The effigy is rendered in high relief in the baroque manner typical of mid-17th-century French feudal coinage. The circumferential legend is divided by the truncation of the bust, with the date 1652 placed in the lower exergual area. The coin's milled edge with fine graining is visible at the rim. |

| Reverse description | A bold cross formed by four interlocked double-L monograms (the cipher of Louis), with a crown surmounting each arm terminal and a fleur-de-lis in each of the four angles between the arms. At the center of the cross is a small orbed roundel enclosing the mint letter A (Paris). The overall composition is symmetrical and heraldic in character, closely following the design conventions of contemporary royal French gold coinage. The circumferential legend is distributed around the periphery within the milled border. |
