Reverse description Central cross formed by four interlocked capital letter H's, with a smaller H at the center of the junction, all surmounted by a royal crown at the top arm of the cross. In the four angles between the arms of the cross are alternating devices: two crescents (personal emblem of Henry II, placed in the upper-right and lower-left angles) and two fleurs-de-lis (upper-left and lower-right angles), along with decorative rose ornaments at the horizontal arm terminals. The circumferential Latin legend encircles the design with the date 1558 and the mint letter H integrated into the inscription. The overall composition is bold and heraldic, consistent with French royal gold coinage of the mid-sixteenth century.
