Obverse description Central shield of France semé with fleurs-de-lis, surmounted by an elaborate royal crown. Flanking the shield are two crowned royal cyphers (letter H), each beneath a small crown, all rendered in high relief on a flat field. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the royal legend running along the outer border between two beaded rims. The date 1589 and mint letter A appear integrated within the circumferential legend.
