Obverse description An allegorical female figure representing the Genius of American Independence rises from a recumbent position in the field, raising her left hand toward thirteen stars radiating brilliance in the upper portion of the design, while her right hand grasps a sword at her side. The date 1776 appears in the exergue, and a circular legend surrounds the central device within a beaded border.
