Obverse description A large spread-winged American bald eagle in high relief occupies the central field, bearing a striped shield on its breast, an olive branch in its left talon and arrows in its right. A ribbon above the eagle bears the legend E PLURIBUS UNUM, with the arc legend AMERICAN EXHIBITION above and, in the lower field, BOSTON / OPENS IN SEPT. 1883, with a small five-pointed star in the exergue.
