Reverse description Quartered coat of arms of Castile and Leon within a plain cross, dividing the field into four quadrants: castles of Castile (a three-towered castle) in the first and fourth quarters, and lions of Leon (a passant lion) in the second and third quarters. The mint mark 'S' for Seville is visible within the lower right quadrant. The design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the Latin circumferential legend PETRUS DEI GRACIA REX CASTELLE E LEGIONIS running around the periphery. The heraldic devices are boldly rendered in the Gothic style, consistent with Castilian gold coinage of the reign of Pedro I.
