| Obverse description | Central field occupied by a crowned Gothic shield bearing a plain diagonal band (bendel) devoid of lion heads, rendered in a fine crosshatched style typical of Castilian hammered gold coinage. The mint mark 'B' for Burgos appears prominently above the shield within an inner beaded circle. The surrounding legend reads IOHANIS DEI GRACIA REX CASTELLE, separated by circular stops, and is contained within an outer beaded border. The overall die work is characteristic of the mid-fifteenth-century Castilian royal workshop. |
