| Obverse description | Facing right, the helmeted head of Athena is rendered in fine high relief in the classical Greek tradition. The goddess wears an Attic helmet with a tall, elaborately articulated crest, the bowl decorated with a forward-facing griffin in profile — a hallmark type of Thourian coinage. Flowing locks of hair emerge from beneath the helmet and curl along the neck. The modeling of the facial features is naturalistic and finely executed, reflecting the high artistic standards of South Italian die-cutters of the late fourth century BC. |
