| Obverse description | Facing left, the bearded head of Herakles rendered in bold archaic relief, surmounted by the scalp of the Nemean lion serving as a headdress, with the beast's open jaws and mane rendered in finely engraved detail atop the hero's crown. The facial features are executed in the severe early archaic style, with a pronounced beard rendered as a dense cluster of dotted curls and a strong, prominent nose and chin. The lion's mane flows dramatically behind the head, its striated locks filling the upper right field of the flan. The naturalistic modelling of the portrait anticipates the more refined die-cutting of the classical period, and the entire composition is struck on a broad, slightly convex flan with characteristic early Thracian fabric. |
