Additional information

Thourioi was a Panhellenic colony founded in 444/3 BC on the site of destroyed Sybaris, the project backed by Athens and reportedly organized with input from Hippodamus of Miletus. The distater denomination served the city's substantial commercial activity in the western Greek world, where Thourioi functioned as a significant regional power before Italic pressures — particularly from the Lucanians — began contracting its territorial reach through the late fourth century. The coin falls squarely within that period of managed decline.
