Obverse description Hippocampus or dolphin swimming right over a stylized wave pattern; above, a Phoenician inscription reading 'one thirtieth' (of a mina) in the field. In exergue, a murex shell, the emblem emblematic of Tyre's celebrated purple-dye industry. The design is rendered in relief against a plain field, characteristic of early Phoenician civic coinage.
