| Obverse description | Central field bears a bold Arabic legend in informal, hastily-struck Naskh script, characteristic of the transitional Mongol coinage of the 1260s. The inscription, occupying the entire flan, displays the kalima or a portion of a religious formula typical of Mongol-issued silver dirhams of this period. The fabric is irregular and slightly dumpy, consistent with hand-hammered production from a small, provincial mint. Flan edges are uneven with slight metal flow at the periphery. The overall die workmanship is crude, reflecting the unsettled political conditions during Arigh Buqa's rivalry with Kublai Khan. |
