| Reverse description | Central field contains a multi-line Kufic inscription arranged in horizontal registers within a circular border, recording the name of the Abbasid caliph and the Samanid amir Isma'il ibn Ahmad as the issuing authority. The inner margin separates the central legends from the outer marginal legend, which carries the continuation of the Quranic verse (Surat al-Tawba 9:33) in flowing Kufic script encircling the field. The mint name al-Shash and the regnal year are incorporated within the central inscription area, as was standard practice for Samanid dirhams. The flan is slightly irregular at the edges, consistent with hand-struck silver coinage of the late 9th century. |
