| Obverse description | Central field occupied by a bold Arabic legend within a dotted square border, bearing the royal title and name of Sultan Tochtamysh. The four names of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs (Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali) are disposed in the angles or margins surrounding the central square, a characteristic formulaic arrangement of Golden Horde coinage. The script is a robust, slightly compressed Naskh-style Arabic, struck on a irregularly shaped flan typical of hammered Mongol dirhams. The overall design is deeply struck with high relief lettering, and the dotted border remains partially visible around the inscription panel. |
