Obverse description Central field bears the Islamic profession of faith (Shahada) in multiple lines of Kufic Arabic script, reading 'There is no god but Allah alone, He has no associate.' The inscription is arranged in a square or rectangular block at the centre, surrounded by a circular marginal legend within a dotted border. The script is angular early Kufic, characteristic of Umayyad coinage of the post-reform period following Abd al-Malik's monetary reform of AH 79 (698 CE). No figural imagery is present, consistent with the strictly epigraphic tradition of Umayyad silver coinage.
