Obverse description Epigraphic type with no figurative imagery, typical of Umayyad silver coinage. The central field contains the shahada in three lines of Kufic script, declaring the oneness of God. A concentric inner marginal band bears the mint and date formula naming Harran as the place of striking, while the outer marginal legend carries the Quranic verse of Surah At-Tawbah (9:33) proclaiming the mission of the Prophet Muhammad. The inscriptions are executed in an early angular Kufic style within two raised concentric circular borders, the whole set against a flat, unadorned field characteristic of early Islamic hammered dirhams.
