Additional information

Al-Zahir Ghazi, son of Saladin, ruled Aleppo for nearly four decades and oversaw a mint program notably more varied in type than most Ayyubid contemporaries. The six-pointed star design on this dirham belongs to a geometric series introduced during his reign, likely reflecting the influence of local artisan traditions in northern Syria. Production continued under his successors, which complicates precise attribution within the 1236–1260 bracket — the type outlived the man who introduced it.

The Mongol sack of Aleppo in 1260 ended the Ayyubid emirate abruptly, making late issues from this mint among the last coins struck before the city's destruction.
