Obverse description Central field occupied by multiple horizontal lines of Arabic script in the Naskh style, bearing the religious legend and the name of the ruling sultan al-Ashraf Barsbay. The legends are boldly struck in high relief against a flat field, typical of Mamluk hammered coinage. The coin's irregular flan displays characteristic edge irregularities consistent with hand-cut planchets of the period. The upper margin retains traces of a peripheral inscription running along the rim.
