| Reverse description | Nike, the goddess of victory, is depicted seated to the left upon a cippus (a low, rectangular funerary or votive pillar), wearing a sleeveless, full-length chiton with finely rendered drapery folds. Her right hand extends forward holding a laurel wreath, while her left hand rests upon the cippus for support. The partial ethnic legend ΤΕΡ Ι (for ΤΕΡΙΝΑ) is disposed in the field, identifying the issuing city of Terina in Bruttium. The composition reflects the refined Hellenistic artistic sensibility prevalent in Magna Graecia coinage of this period. |
