Obverse description Forepart of a lion in crouching stance oriented to the right, rendered in bold archaic relief characteristic of late 6th- to early 5th-century Ionian coinage. The beast is depicted with head lowered and turned back to face the viewer, mouth slightly agape, with a carefully engraved mane indicated by hatched striations along the neck and shoulder. The curling tail rises prominently over the hindquarters, and the musculature of the haunches and forelegs is rendered with vigorous plasticity. No legend or inscription appears in the field.
