| Obverse description | A single upright barley ear rendered in high relief, depicted with well-defined grain seeds along both sides of the central stalk, the awns splaying outward at the tip. The design is centered within the broadly irregular flan, characteristic of the early Archaic coinage of Metapontion. The barley ear serves as the principal civic emblem of the city, referencing the agricultural prosperity of the Tarentine Gulf region. No inscription or border ornament accompanies the type. |
