Obverse description Central device depicts a theropod dinosaur rendered in bold relief standing before a backdrop of hoodoos, the distinctive columnar rock formations characteristic of the Alberta Badlands. The dinosaur figure faces left and occupies the central field. The legend DINOSAUR DOLLAR arcs along the upper periphery, with DRUMHELLER, ALBERTA inscribed along the lower periphery, all in raised Latin characters. The overall design is executed in a straightforward illustrative style typical of Canadian trade dollar issues of the period.

Additional information

Drumheller's trade dollar program launched as a tourism stimulus during a period when the town was aggressively marketing its badlands geography and the newly expanded Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology, which opened in 1985. These municipal trade dollars circulated locally as merchant scrip — accepted at face value by participating businesses — and were never legal tender under Canadian law. The 1983 issue predates the museum's opening, placing it squarely in the promotional buildup years.
