| Reverse description | A bold plain cross extending to the rim divides the reverse field into four quadrants, each containing a pellet or annulet ornament. The peripheral legend, distributed one letter group per quadrant angle, reads PO RT VG AL, spelling PORTVGAL — the medieval Latin designation for Portugal. The lettering is crudely executed in the Gothic style typical of hammered billon coinage of the early Portuguese monarchy. The flan exhibits the same irregular form and edge chipping as the obverse, with heavy corrosion and verdigris deposits obscuring some peripheral detail. |
